about

This compiles nearly everything recorded by the band Lick the Star between the Summer of 2001 and Fall of 2002 and gives it a proper/permanent issue into the universe over 2 decades later. A document of a naive/innocent, insanely creative time informed by post-teenage/early 20's angst, the "new millenium," and the fallout of 9/11.

These are songs and sounds driven by an incredible love of music, inside jokes, improvisation (yes, and?), badly tuned guitars... not to mention a seemingly endless supply of coffee, cigarettes, and gear we couln't really afford. Everything we did was etremely DIY and done on a shoestring budget. More care was put into documenting the moment than refinement.

1-8 - Original "Falling Off Swingsets" album. Recorded live to Tascam 4 track (except for vocals, which we overdubbed) over 3 separate sessions between October of 2001 and February 2002 @ Mold Spore Studios (AKA Gary's basement) New Bedford MA and Rachel's living room in Dartmouth MA. Originally released on 6/25/2002 as a very limited edition CD-R. Probably around 30 copies exist(ed). We didn't sell too many. Most of them went to our friends and family.

9-18 - Various 4-track demo sessions, circa Summer 2001. Just Brad and Gary. Before the sonic change that happened when Rachel joined. A couple of these made it out in the world on limited CDR's we gave people.

19-21 - Covers of of some of our faves. All rights to the original songwriters, we claim nothing!

22-24 - Originally from the "Clean Hands In A Dirty Industry" single. Originally released in 2 parts at some shows in 2002. The "single remix" never actually got released. It has bass, one of the few songs we ever made that has bass. "Dreamscapes" and "Blame" are rerecordings of some earlier demos, to varying results.

25-26 - Outtakes culled/edited from a very long song originally recorded for the Swingsets album that didn't make the cut.

27 - Final "official" LTS recording, and the only song we completed as a quartet w/Mark playing 3rd (!!!) guitar. Fall 2002. This originally was for a Holiday/Christmas compilation of some sort, and it did have lyrics/vocals... but they really weren't good.

28- Soundtrack work for an unreleased horror film, circa Summer/Fall 2001. We recorded some other pieces as well, but those tapes have been lost.

29-34 - Originally released as the "Wooden Rock" EP in 2002. Another limited edition CDR. Live acoustic session in Rachel's living room straigh to minidisc on May 10, 2002 before we went to see Luna in Providence, RI.

35-40 - Various live performances of varying performance and recording quality of almost the whole "Swingsets" suite (We never played "His Feet Bleed" live). Largely sourced from two 2002 shows at Compost Gallery in Hardwick VT, and Arclight Room in Meriden CT.
